A depiction overlooking part of a Roman city

Welcome to The CaesarIII Augustus Ultimate Handbook

This handbook has been compiled from five sources:

  • The printed book that originally came with CD purchases of CaesarIII
  • The help screens built into CaesarIII
  • The many forums (sorry, fora) on the internet dedicated to CaesarIII, most notably HeavenGames
  • The personal websites of individuals who have documented their own thoughts on, and investigations into, CaesarIII.
  • My own playing experience, programming knowledge of both the Julius and Augustus recreations of CaesarIII, and my educational studies in Latin and Ancient Rome.

It has taken an enormous amount of time and effort to trawl through the mountains of information and discussions to find content worthy of being included in this handbook, and to organise it into 100s of topics. As a result, it has not been possible to specifically credit the many individuals whose contributions you will find in this handbook. This is by no means an attempt by me to pass off as my own their excellent insights into City Building, both in general and as it is applied to CaesarIII Augustus, and their investigations into the mechanics of the game and its accompanying files.

Therefore, when reading this handbook, please assume that the credit for what you are reading is owed to someone other than myself. In turn, I will not be taking credit for anything you read, including the parts that I have written. I will only take credit for the hard work of collating the wealth of information available and organising it into the many sections that now comprise The CaesarIII Augustus Ultimate Handbook.

I hope that my efforts in producing this handbook will contribute to the further longevity of CaesarIII Augustus. The original release of the game struck a chord with many people (including myself) which continues to this day, still brings in new converts to the CaesarIII citizenry, and is spawning open-source recreations of the original game to leverage up-to-date technology and take the game to new levels of playability, complexity and enjoyment; all of which means that CaesarIII, in its various guises and incarnations, continues to be popular and actively played and discussed more than 25 years after its initial release in 1998.

I hope you will find this handbook both interesting and useful.

Nota Bene: Throughout this handbook, words that have a particular significance in CaesarIII Augustus are frequently capitalised. This helps make it clear that we are speaking about their use in CaesarIII Augustus specifically rather than as a general concept, e.g. Tents.

Where applicable, each main subject heading will start with what the original book has to say on the subject.

Feel free to contact me in my Governor's Palace with any CaesarIII Augustus information or additional chapters that you think should be included in this handbook, or with any corrections.

Obligatory Disclaimer: I will not be held liable for any damage caused to your city or its citizens, your city's finances, your personal finances, your overall standing in Rome, nor with the [lack of] progress of your career, as a direct or indirect result of applying any of the information in this handbook.
